Defeated

You have defeated me —
Utterly, completely.
My corpse lies mangled on the battlefield,
Blood pooling in my plastic trench coat,
Boiling in the presence of the imposing sun.
You took a sledgehammer to my brittle bones,
The savage cracking causing you utmost delight.
I'm just another victim,
Another face in a sea of masks.
I piece myself together so that once again I can see your face,
My broken hand grasping for the air where you once stood.
My heart is a participation trophy,
And my brain is a baby's rattle.
A thousand years have passed,
And tears still stream down my face.
